We are creating a tuning library of physical instruments in Studio #2 at our centre using our practice instruments with iron keys. So far, Vaughan has reconstructed 63 tunings from the notes of early 20th century researchers such as Jaap Kunst and Colin McPhee. The tunings so far include the following ensembles: Angklung, Semara Patangian, Semara Pandirian, Five-tone Semara Pagulingan, Six-tone Semara Pagulingan, Seven-tone Semara Pagulingan, Selonding (both seven and five tone), Gong Luang, Saron, Gender Wayang, Gong Kebyar, Gong Gede, Sekati, Semarandhana and Gambang. Most of tune tunings are either extinct in Bali or at least extremely rare. There are also several tunings that Vaughan created himself.

We believe that this library will be useful for villages in Bali that have lost their old gamelan traditions, instruments and tunings: a reference point for them to reconstruct and revive their heritage.

The only library of its kind in the world, it will also be a fascinating place for music-heads to visit!
